Workshop: Writing for non-peers and press

ATTENTION! This is an ALL-DAY workshop.

Trainer: Ann De Ron

Writing for a broad audience is more than translating words that might be too difficult and more than giving some background information. You have to bring your story in a totally different way than in a scientific publication. Readers must be teased to read the article.

Purpose of this workshop is to offer practical tools to write your own popular scientific text for a magazine, newspaper, blog or other medium, or to be able to contribute to texts by press officers or (science) journalists.

This workshop in English is hands-on as well: you will define a key message customized to your audience, think about a suitable text structure, discuss texts, give and receive feedback on text outlines of fellow participants. Because of limited time, it is not the purpose that everyone writes a completely finished publishable text.

Lecturer

Ann De Ron worked for 10 years as a journalist and editor for several Belgian and international print media and websites, for instance for the newspaper De Morgen, Knack magazine, MO*Magazine and Natuur & Techniek (the Dutch NewScientist). She coordinated WeCom, a communication project for scientists. In 2008 she started training researchers in popular scientific writing. By now she has given this workshop at several universities and research institutions, and at the both other editions of this summer school.
